Top end travail

It has been great fun to head back north this week to catch up with ex-NSW LearnScoper Bill Wade and family (who says Hi to all his NSW friends) and to work with a small but diverse and motivated group of NT LearnScopers from a range of industries. We met in the small but well resourced Australian Technical College above Dick Smiths and just down from a fabulous gallery with many temptations! I was lucky enough to also coincide with the 2007 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award exhibition at the museum and was proud as punch :> to see the work of one of my ex-Milikapiti students hanging there. Go Nina!
The aim of the Connected Voices workshop was to introduce a range social software tools over a day and a half with the underlying thread of RSS (connections) and tagging. I’m now in Darwin airport awaiting my flight back to the big smoke. It’s been busy with a pretty packed agenda and a lot for people to get their heads around in such a short length of time, but I hope each headed off with something in mind to pursue.

What really struck me (apart from the fact that all were industry rather than RTO based) was the median age of the group; half under 30 - and most of those under 25. There was plenty of talk about Bebo and other social networking accounts etc although only a few considered themselves to have a strong online ID…. interesting. The issues though were common and not a surprise - distance, time, bandwidth, inadequate resourcing, mindset etc etc.
Meet the group in our podcast below and check out our wiki page which we’ll continue to grow. Thanks to Mel and Katharina and all the NT crew for your hospitality!
